False memories with normal aging: role of paradigms and cognitive factors

In the literature, aging is often associated with a greater susceptibility to false memories, although this seems to vary according to the paradigm employed. Furthermore, cognitive factors such as executive functions or working memory could partially explain the variation in age-related differences in the production of false memories. This review therefore proposes a synthesis of studies on false memories in normal aging with DRM and misinformation paradigms in the light of the two theoretical models regularly used to explain susceptibility to false memories. We then present the main cognitive factors and discuss their respective roles in false memories according to paradigm and age. These cognitive factors should be considered to have a better understanding of age-related differences in susceptibility to false memories.
